Togura Onsen and Kamiyamada Onsen were opened in 1893 (Meiji 26) and 1903 (Meiji 36), respectively, between the streams of the river at that time, and were the first hot springs in Japan to be bored using modern methods and to boil.
One of those who recruited friends, raised funds, and promoted the Kamiyamada Onsen hot spring excavation was Matasaburo Wakabayashi. Matasaburo served as president of Kamiyamada Onsen Co., Ltd. and opened a public bathhouse, Kaminoyu, in front of which a hot spring resort of teahouses and ryokan (Japanese-style inns) was established. After the opening of Togura Station on the Shinetsu Line in 1912, the number of visitors from faraway places increased, and it has become a popular hot spring for those who visit Zenkoji Temple.
His son, Masamitsu, took charge of the management of Kamiyamada Onsen, and a new “Kame no Yu” was constructed at the No. 2 source, and the main street of the onsen was opened in front of it. Masamitsu, who was returning to the U.S., thought, “In the U.S., there are hotels, which are facilities for people to gather and stay overnight. Masamitsu, who had returned to the U.S., founded “Kamiyamada Hotel” with his younger brother, Masaharu Wakabayashi, as the first owner. Since then, the hotel has been loved by everyone as “Yumoto Kamiyamada Hotel” for four generations, and has now been in business for a century.

The men's and women's large baths, men's and women's open-air baths, and private baths are all 100% natural hot spring water.
The color of the hot water changes depending on the temperature, humidity, and light.
The color often changes from night to morning, so much so that customers ask if we put “bath salts” in the baths. Sometimes blue, sometimes green, sometimes milky white. Sometimes blue, sometimes green, sometimes milky white. Please enjoy the change in color.
You can drink the water from the hot spring outlet. Please enjoy it safely and in moderation.

There are two private baths on the first floor.
There is no need to apply at the front desk, and you can freely enter the room when it is available, free of charge.
If you lock the door when you use the room, the lamp will be lit while the room is in use.
The red light indicates that other guests are bathing, while the green light indicates that you are free to enter.
The temperature may be heated by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius at the source (Kamiyamada Onsen Co., Ltd.) only during the severe winter season.
