Park with water, greenery and enrichment

On the former site of the Kamiyamada Kanko Kaikan (sightseeing hall), there is a relaxing plaza for everyone with a hot spring drinking fountain, a footbath, and a covered stage, all centered around a pond. The footbath in the plaza is well known for its sulfuric aroma and smooth skin, and is a relaxing spot to soak while enjoying the view of the trees in the park.

The shining neon lights of the hot spring resort town give it a glamorous Showa-era atmosphere, and you can also enjoy the old-fashioned shooting games and onsen manju (hot spring buns) that are typical of a hot spring resort town. Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen is also famous for its geiko, so you may want to immerse yourself in a performance of shamisen or nagauta (long epic songs).

Public bathhouse Yumoto Kamenoyu
[Approx. 5 min. walk]
Kamenoyu is a hot spring that has been loved by local residents for over 100 years and boasts the best tradition in the area. In addition to the indoor baths, the main attraction of this bathhouse is that it is equipped with an open-air bath, which is rare for a public bathhouse. Multiple sources are skillfully blended and the water is kept at the optimum temperature by pouring it over the baths, thus achieving a pleasant water temperature.

Oshibori Udon
[Approx. 5 min. walk]
Oshibori Udon” is made by squeezing Shinshu's specialty ‘jidaikon’ (local radish) with a cloth and adding miso, green onion, dried bonito flakes, walnuts, and other condiments as desired, and then enjoying it as a dipping sauce for kama-age udon noodles. It is a local specialty that warms the body and makes one sweat.

Kamiyamada Central Park

In spring, the park is covered with a magnificent expanse of cherry blossoms. The annual cherry blossom viewing party, organized by the Okami no Kai of Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, attracts many people every year with food stalls. The spacious grounds also have benches and are a great place to take children.

Togura Kamiamada Onsen Summer Festival
The stylish and lively “Summer Festival” and the “Smoke Festival” that lights up the night sky are held at the Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen Summer Festival, a two-day festival that features a variety of events such as geiko woodcarving, folk dance performances, yushishi lions, kanjikata drums, and wakaren mikoshi (portable shrine). The festival finale is a spectacular fireworks display.

Shinshu Chikuma City Chikuma River Noryo Fireworks Festival
This is one of the largest events in Nagano Prefecture, held along the Chikuma River (between Taishobashi Bridge and Manyo Bridge) in Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. Visitors can enjoy powerful fireworks such as the Starmine, music fireworks, and a 300-meter-long Niagara over the Manyo Bridge. There are also about 100 night stalls and plenty to see and do.

Sakai Meijo Sake Brewery Collection
[Approx. 5 min. by car]
The Sake Brewery Collection is a 400-year-old sake brewery of Sakai Meizo that is open to the public as a museum. In addition to the tools used in sake brewing and the manufacturing process, the museum also houses the Hakuo Kasha Memorial Hall for the haiku poet Kasha and a gallery of paintings by Yumeji Takehisa. Visitors can also enjoy stained glass making and pottery making at the studio, enjoy sozoba cuisine and a café in the thatched-roof main building, which is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property, as well as a selection of carefully selected souvenirs.

Zenkoji Daihongan Betsuin
[Approx. 10 min. by car]
The temple is located halfway up Joyama, a steep mountain slope from the hot spring resort area. It is a very scenic location overlooking the hot spring resort.

Okutsu Shrine
[Approx. 10 min. by car]
God of marriage and children. It is not unusual for families in this area to have four or more children, and the shrine has long been popular with many people. During the Onsen Summer Festival held every July, an alter ego of the deity is placed in a portable shrine and paraded in a heroic procession through the hot spring resort area as part of the traditional event.

Jyoyama Historical Park
[Approx. 5 min. by car]
A scenic spot overlooking the Chikuma River and the entire Kita-Shinano area. The sunrise from here is the best. The castle is a reconstruction of a mountain castle in a series of fortifications that was called “Arato Castle” in the Warring States Period. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of Kamiyamada in the exhibition room, which utilizes the Ninokaku barracks.

Shinshu Yumebara no Sato
[Approx. 10 min. by car]
Shinshu Yumebara no Sato cultivates more than 1 million roses annually using state-of-the-art technology. In the garden, where colorful roses bloom all year round, visitors can also enjoy picking a variety of seasonal fruits, such as cherries from early to late June and blueberries from early July to late August.

Obasute・Tanada(Tagoto Moon)

The terraced rice paddies of Yosetsu are designated as a special national scenic spot. Since ancient times, they have attracted travelers together with Zenkoji Temple as “the moon on Mt. The beautiful sight of the moon reflected in the rice paddies, which varies from paddy to paddy, is widely known as “moon over each rice paddy. Popular night tours of Yasuyasan are also planned, allowing visitors to enjoy the fantastic scenery. (Please inquire for details.) Furthermore, there is an owner system for the terraced rice paddies, which allows visitors to contribute to the preservation of this beautiful scenery through agricultural experience.

Agri-Park Apricot Village

The Kurashina area of Chikuma City is known as “the best apricot village in Japan. Agri-Park, located in this area, is a theme park-type sightseeing farm where visitors can enjoy themselves all day long, with one of the largest strawberry and mandarin orchards in Japan, covering an area of 2,400 tsubo. In addition to the orchard, there is also a flower shop where visitors can purchase a wide variety of flowers at reasonable prices, a light meal and cafe space, and freshly baked bread for sale. In addition, a spacious children's room and nursing room are available. It is also recommended for families with small children.

Nagano Prefectural Museum of History
[Approx. 20 min. by car]
This prefectural history museum allows visitors to learn about the history of the town in front of the Zenkoji Temple gate and the transition of the Zenkoji Plain from the Jomon Period to the present day, period by period. The museum has a variety of exhibits that can be enjoyed by children of elementary school age and older as well as adults. Seminars and special exhibitions planned by curators are also held from time to time. It is a must-see spot for history buffs.

Mori Shogunzuka Tumulus
[Approx. 35 min. by car]
The Chikuma City Museum exhibits a reproduction of the interior stone wall of Shogun's Mound, located at the top of the mountain. Shogun-zuka is a gigantic posterior frontal round burial mound built on top of the mountain, reproducing the appearance of the time of its creation. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains on the Shinetsu border, the Northern Alps, and the Zenkoji Plain, offering both history and spectacular views.

Mt. Inari
[Approx. 20 min. by car]
Mt. Inari once prospered as a major transportation and trading center. After the opening of the railroad, the area was left behind in terms of development, but the townscape of those days has remained intact. In recent years, however, the town has been demolished due to aging and difficulties in management, and it has become a challenge to hand down the historic scenery to the next generation.

Togurajuku Kitty Park
[Approx. 25 min. by car]
This park offers a panoramic view of the Chikuma River and the surrounding mountains. Cherry blossom trees are planted throughout the area, providing a beautiful view of flowers in spring. The park is also equipped with an area where goats and rabbits are free-range and a variety of playground equipment. This is a spot that can be enjoyed by small children.

Chausuyama Zoo
[Approx. 25 min. by car]
The Chikuma City Museum exhibits a reproduction of the interior stone wall of Shogun's Mound, located at the top of the mountain. Shogun-zuka is a gigantic posterior frontal round burial mound built on top of the mountain, reproducing the appearance of the time of its creation. From the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains on the Shinetsu border, the Northern Alps, and the Zenkoji Plain, offering both history and spectacular views.

Matsushiro
[Approx. 30 min. by car]
Matsushiro was once the scene of the Battle of Kawanakajima and is known as a place associated with the Sanada clan. The atmosphere of a castle town remains throughout the town. The Sanada Residence in the photo was built by Yukinori Sanada, the ninth lord of the feudal domain, as a retirement home for his mother, and retains the appearance of an old daimyo's mansion. The beautiful garden on the grounds is in the style of Kobori Enshu, and is well worth seeing. The Treasure House in front of the mansion exhibits valuable items that belonged to the Sanada family. The ruins of the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters, a modern heritage site, is also a historical spot that attracts many visitors.

Ueda Castle
[Approx. 30 min. by car]
Ueda Castle was a solid castle built by Masayuki Sanada, who twice defeated a large Tokugawa army. Today, the castle ruins are maintained as a park and the center of sightseeing in Ueda City. The park is lined with zelkova trees said to be 100 years old, and approximately 1,000 cherry trees add color to the spring season. In addition, visitors can enjoy the seasonal changes throughout the year, including festivals in summer, the season of autumn leaves, and the beautiful snowy scenery in winter when the entire moat is frozen over.

Zenkoji Temple
[Approx. 35 min. by car]
In 2022, the “Gokaicho” was held once every seven years, and in place of the Gohonzon, which is a hidden statue of Buddha, the “Maehonzon” was moved to the main hall of the temple. Zenkoji Temple has long been worshipped by the general public as a temple that can be visited by anyone, regardless of denomination. Visitors are encouraged to experience the “O-kaidan-meguri” tour, in which they can touch the lock directly under the main image of the temple. After visiting the temple, take a stroll along the elegant Nakamise Street and visit the adjacent Higashiyama Art Museum.

Suzaka Zoo
[Approx. 45 min. by car]
The Suzaka Zoo was once the talk of the town for its red kangaroo, “Hutch. In winter, visitors can see capybaras soaking in hot springs and other adorable animals. Admission fees are reasonable and the zoo is an easy spot to enjoy.
